Police Debunks Alleged Killings by Community Vigilantes in Aba and Ugwunagbo, Orders Full Investigation

The Abia State Police Command has denied reports aired on Arise TV alleging that local community vigilante groups in parts of Aba and Ugwunagbo Local Government Areas killed several young men and adult males with the support of traditional rulers.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 16, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Command described the reports as false and unverified.

According to the statement, no official report of such killings had been received at the Command Headquarters, any Area Command, or Divisional Police Station across the state. The Police also confirmed that no related complaints were submitted through its emergency hotlines, Complaint Response Unit, or verified social media handles.

Despite the absence of formal complaints, the Police Command has set up a special investigation team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to probe the allegations.

The team has been directed to examine all circumstances surrounding the claims, identify possible perpetrators if any, and ensure justice is served based on verifiable evidence.

DSP Chinaka disclosed that the Police have invited traditional rulers, vigilante commanders, and youth leaders from the affected communities of Umuogele and Iheorji (Aba South LGA) and Nkpaevula (Ugwunagbo LGA) for questioning.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Abia State, stressing that the state continues to enjoy relative peace and security.

“Abia remains largely peaceful, thanks to the sustained collaboration between the Police, sister security agencies, and the strong support of the Abia State Government,” CP Isa said.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or threats through the Command’s official emergency contact lines: 08035415405, 08079210004, 08079210005, and 08079210006.

The Police reiterated their zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions by any individual or group, warning that anyone found guilty of taking the law into their own hands would face prosecution.

“See something, say something. Together, let’s make Abia safe,” the statement concluded.

The Police Command assured the public that findings from the ongoing investigation would be made public to maintain transparency and strengthen trust between security agencies and the people of Abia State.
