Abia School Enrolment Figure Doubles As ABSG Sets To Commission Court Complex
Abia State records over 100 percent rise in public school enrolment as the Government prepares to commission a new court complex and launch a contributory pension scheme.
Public school enrolment in Abia State has more than doubled between July and October. The Government attributes the surge to the free education programme for primary and junior secondary schools.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this at Government House Umuahia after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. He said the figures came from recent data collection by ASUBEB. Schools and Local Government Education Authorities provided the records.
Prince Kanu said the jump in numbers shows renewed public trust in government schools. He listed reforms driving the growth. Recruitment of new teachers. Prompt salary payment. Extra support for teachers in hard-to-reach areas. Increase in teachers retirement age from 60 to 65. Improved learning environment. Constant training. New school curricula.
He also announced that Governor Otti will commission the Umueñe Ultra Modern Court Building in Isiala Ngwa South on Wednesday, 29 October. It is part of the judicial reforms in the state. The Government is building 17 modern court houses across all Local Government Areas. The Umueñe Court Building is the first completed. The others are in different stages of work. The new structures will support faster and better delivery of justice.
Prince Kanu revealed the Governor will launch a Contributory Pension Scheme for Abia workers in November 2025. He said workers welfare now receives proper attention. He noted that the administration cleared the outstanding pension arrears left by the previous government. A special committee is handling gratuity payment. Monthly salaries and pensions are paid on the 28th day.
He urged residents to stay safe during the ember months. He warned motorists against one-way driving. He said enforcement teams and the FRSC already launched a campaign called Road Safety is a Shared Responsibility. Drive to Arrive. Any driver who breaks traffic rules will face the law. He said even the Governor’s convoy obeys traffic rules.
The Attorney General, Ikechukwu Uwanna SAN, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, attended the briefing.
