“Write Results, Write Your Will”: Abia Govt Explains Governor Otti’s Viral Statement
Abia State Government clarifies Governor Alex Otti’s statement on electoral integrity, stressing it was a call for lawful, transparent elections—not a threat.
The Abia State Government has issued a formal clarification following public reactions to Governor Alex Chioma Otti’srecent comments on electoral integrity, which some had misinterpreted as a threat.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the government explained that the Governor’s words during the October edition of “Governor Alex Otti Speaks” were a figurative expression, not a call to violence.
Governor Otti had advised anyone planning to “write election results” in future elections to “first write their wills.” According to the government, the statement was a symbolic warning against electoral malpractice, emphasizing the administration’s firm commitment to free, fair, and credible elections.
“The Governor’s remark aligns with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which vests sovereignty in the people,” the statement read. “It also resonates with the 2022 Electoral Act, particularly Section 128, which criminalizes result falsification and outlines penalties for electoral fraud.”
The release stressed that the Governor’s message was consistent with democratic principles and the rule of law, reaffirming his resolve to protect the people’s mandate and uphold transparent governance in Abia State.
It also highlighted that Governor Otti’s administration has remained peaceful and law-abiding since assuming office on May 29, 2023, noting that no citizen has been unlawfully detained for political reasons under his leadership.
“Dr. Alex Otti is a man of peace who believes in justice and due process. His approach has always been lawful, focusing on institutional reform and dialogue rather than intimidation or extra-legal means,” the Information Commissioner added.
The statement urged the public and political actors to interpret the Governor’s comments within their constitutional and legal context, emphasizing that Abia is now governed by laws, not political thuggery or manipulation.
Furthermore, the government reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Abians, as guaranteed under Section 39(1) of the Constitution, provided such freedoms are exercised responsibly and in the interest of peace and truth.
“The era of electoral malpractice and subversion of the people’s will is over,” the statement concluded. “Under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership, Abia is building a democratic culture founded on transparency, integrity, and genuine service to the people.”
