Abia Arrests 108 During Monthly Clean-Up in Umuahia
Abia State arrested 108 persons during the October clean-up in Umuahia as the government intensifies sanitation enforcement and prepares a market mobile court to improve public hygiene.
A total of 108 persons were arrested in Umuahia during the October monthly clean-up exercise in Abia State. They were picked up by a task force of the Ministry of Environment for trading and loitering during the sanitation hours.
All offenders were taken to the Abia State Mobile Environmental Court. Magistrate Chinenye Ibekwe released 10 persons who proved they were students. Two persons with health issues were freed. Ninety-six persons were convicted and fined for violating environmental laws.
The Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, monitored the clean-up. He said clean surroundings protect residents from disease outbreaks. Governor Alex Otti places strong focus on public health and environmental hygiene.
Ogbonna revealed that sanitary inspectors have started a house-to-house system. Their job is to ensure compounds, homes, and businesses stay clean. He urged residents to take responsibility for where they live and work.
The Nigerian Army joined the exercise at Isi Gate. Their presence helped clean the busy area and improved the overall look of the capital city. The commissioner thanked them for supporting civic actions.
A mobile court will soon be set up at Orie Ugba Market in Umuahia North. The goal is to punish traders who ignore environmental rules. Government wants markets free of waste and hazards.
The Commissioner appealed to the public to cooperate fully during clean-up days. He said Abia will stay healthier when everyone follows sanitation rules.
