Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu renovates the Umuahia Correctional Centre and pays fines for over 15 inmates in Umuahia and Aba, earning praise from the Nigerian Correctional Service for his compassion and commitment to public service and institutional reform.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, PhD, CFR, has renovated the administrative block of the Umuahia Correctional Centre in Abia State and paid the fines of over 15 inmates in both Umuahia and Aba Correctional Centres.
The renovation, which included re-roofing and ceiling of the facility, was completed in response to a request made by the former State Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mrs. Josephine Ogbeifun, during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Speaker in May 2025.
Kalu’s intervention, described by officials as timely and humane, has restored the structural integrity of the administrative block and created a safer, more conducive environment for correctional officers and inmates previously exposed to harsh weather conditions.
The Deputy Speaker’s decision to pay the fines of more than 15 inmates also reflects his compassion and determination to promote justice and rehabilitation while helping to decongest correctional facilities across Abia State.
In a letter dated July 4, 2025, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, Mni, commended the Deputy Speaker for his generosity and leadership.
“I write to express my sincere appreciation for your generous support in the re-roofing of the Administrative Block at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Umuahia.
“Your timely intervention has significantly improved the structural integrity and functionality of this critical facility, enhancing both staff working conditions and operational efficiency.
“This commendable gesture underscores your steadfast commitment to strengthening federal institutions and developing public infrastructure.”
Nwakuche further described Kalu’s intervention as a strong example of dedication to institutional welfare, aligning with ongoing efforts to reform and professionalize the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Similarly, the Deputy Controller in charge of the Umuahia Custodial Centre, Mr. Michael Ojiako Mabia, in a letter dated October 3, 2025, praised the Deputy Speaker’s action as a demonstration of responsible leadership and genuine concern for marginalized institutions.
“Your kind gesture has not only restored the structural integrity of the building but has also created a safer and more conducive working environment for our officers. It is a reflection of your deep sense of responsibility and commitment to national service.”
Mabia further appealed to Kalu for continued partnership and additional assistance, particularly in paying fines for other inmates to facilitate their release and reduce overcrowding in correctional centres.
The Deputy Speaker’s gesture has drawn widespread commendation from correctional officers, inmates, and community leaders who hailed his proactive approach to public service and social rehabilitation.
Observers note that Kalu’s intervention aligns with his broader vision of inclusive development and humane governance, emphasizing support for institutions that are often neglected yet essential to national reform.
