Abia State Police arrest three suspects for gunrunning, illegal firearms possession, and attempted murder. Weapons recovered in Umuahia and Aba as investigations continue.

Abia Police Arrest Suspects for Gunrunning, Unlawful Firearms Possession, Attempted Murder

Abia State Police Command has arrested three suspects linked to conspiracy, gunrunning, unlawful possession of firearms, and attempted murder. The arrests took place in Umuahia and Aba. Police recovered multiple weapons and live ammunition.

The suspects are:

Kalu Ugwa Ogbonnaya, male, 54 years

Agu Ugochukwu, male, 39 years

Ukandu Leach, male, 43 years

Police listed the recovered exhibits:

Pump action gun, Breech No: MY1183234

Mossberg 930 pump action, Breech No: AFO44698

Seventy six live cartridges

Locally made double barrelled gun

Detectives from the Central Police Station, Umuahia, acted on intelligence on 17 October 2025. They arrested Kalu Ugwa Ogbonnaya over a cargo with Waybill No: HN-INT-7320Do-FDY-U. The cargo contained twenty six live cartridges and a pump action gun. Further search uncovered a Mossberg 930 pump action and fifty more cartridges. All were meant for the suspect.

The suspect confessed. He said the consignment was for Agu Ugochukwu. Police arrested Agu. The suspect said someone in the United States sent the firearms.

Both suspects remain in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Umuahia. Investigations continue.

On 23 October 2025, police responded to a distress call in Aba. Operatives of the Scorpion Squad arrested Ukandu Leach. He claimed he belongs to a vigilante group. He shot Chukwu Emeka, male, 39 years, on his right leg. Police recovered a locally made double barrelled gun. The victim is receiving treatment in a hospital.

Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, praised the swift actions of officers. He said the Command will stay focused on fighting crime. He asked residents to share information with the police. He provided phone contacts. He urged the public to speak up.
