Court Rules DSS Medical Facility Adequate For Nnamdi Kanu’s Treatment

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the medical facility of the Department of State Services (DSS) is adequate to handle the health needs of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Delivering the ruling on Thursday, the presiding judge held that there was no convincing evidence to support the defense’s request for Kanu to be transferred to an independent medical facility outside the custody of the DSS.

The court stated that the DSS medical unit has the necessary capacity and personnel to provide adequate healthcare services for the defendant. The judge added that the claims of neglect and poor medical care presented by Kanu’s legal team were unsubstantiated and lacked proof.

Kanu’s counsel had earlier argued that his client’s health condition required specialized medical attention not available at the DSS clinic, urging the court to order his transfer to a neutral medical facility of his choice.

The prosecution, however, opposed the application, maintaining that the DSS had been consistent in providing the defendant with medical attention whenever required. The prosecution also emphasized that the request was an attempt to undermine the authority of the court and disrupt ongoing proceedings.

After reviewing the submissions from both sides, the court ruled in favor of the prosecution, reaffirming that the DSS remains responsible for Kanu’s safety and medical care while in lawful custody.

The judge then adjourned the case to October 23, 2025, for further hearing on the substantive charges against the IPOB leader.

The ruling has sparked mixed reactions among observers, with some expressing concern about the continued detention of Kanu, while others commended the court for upholding legal and procedural standards.
