Mrs. Priscilla Otti Calls for Regular Screening and Sustained Advocacy as Abia Marks 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Week
Abia First Lady, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, leads the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Week with a call for regular screening, sustained advocacy, and stronger support systems. The event featured an awareness walk in Umuahia and renewed commitment to women’s health in Abia State.
The Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has called for regular breast cancer screening, sustained awareness, and stronger support systems for patients, as the State joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Week.
Speaking at the event organised by the Office of the Wife of the Governor through the Safe Tent Care Initiative, in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Otti stressed that early detection and prevention remain the most effective ways to fight the disease. The event carried the theme, “Celebrating Strength in Every Unique Story.”
Represented by the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adaeze Emetu, Mrs. Otti described survivors as symbols of courage and resilience whose stories inspire others to stay strong and hopeful. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting those still battling the illness.
During the awareness walk, she reminded participants that October is not only about pink ribbons but also about compassion and continuous advocacy. She urged everyone to keep the conversation alive even after the awareness month ends.
“Breast cancer affects everyone. Get screened, show love, donate, share the word, and advocate for change. Every story is unique, every journey is personal, and every battle is courageous,” she said.
Mrs. Otti encouraged women to prioritize their health, noting that breast cancer is not a death sentence when detected early. She called on communities, corporate bodies, and faith-based organizations to intensify awareness efforts and support medical research to fight the disease.
“Let us uplift one another, share our stories, and celebrate life. Together, we can create a future where breast cancer no longer breaks hearts,” she added.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Maureen Aghukwa, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Betty Oguama, commended Mrs. Otti and the Abia healthcare community for their proactive role in promoting women’s health. She urged women to remain vigilant and proactive about their well-being.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Chinenye Nwaka, reaffirmed the Otti administration’s commitment to improving healthcare systems across the State. She described the event as a renewed call for collective action and a reminder that early detection saves lives.
Delivering health guidelines, Dr. Kingsley Anyanwu of the Government House Clinic educated market women at Orieugba and Isigate markets on the symptoms of breast cancer, including lumps, redness, itching, nipple retraction, and unusual breast changes. He advised women to seek immediate medical attention once they notice any irregularities.
Dr. Anyanwu further emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle, encouraging women to eat organic foods, exercise regularly, and avoid habits that may increase cancer risks.
The event featured a health walk through major streets of Umuahia, led by Mrs. Otti’s representative, alongside government officials, medical professionals, and advocacy groups. The walk drew attention to the importance of self-examination, early diagnosis, and breaking the silence surrounding breast cancer.
Stakeholders pledged to continue collaborating with the Office of the Wife of the Governor through the Safe Tent Care Initiative to expand awareness, improve access to screening, and strengthen patient support networks across Abia State.
