Kalu Bets Big on Tinubu, Warns Jonathan Against 2027 Comeback

Former Abia State Governor and Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has openly declared his unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu boldly stated that Tinubu would win the Southeast, insisting that no major political figure, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, or Labour Party’s Peter Obi, can defeat the President in the next election.

Kalu expressed strong confidence in Tinubu’s political capacity and leadership record, describing him as the right man to continue steering Nigeria’s economic recovery and political stability. According to him, Tinubu’s track record as Lagos governor and his early steps as president prove his ability to rebuild the country.

He announced plans to campaign extensively for Tinubu, not only within his Abia North Senatorial District but across the entire Southeast. Kalu said he would personally dedicate five months to grassroots mobilization, working to secure significant support for the President in a region that has historically been a difficult terrain for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“People underestimate Tinubu’s political reach and performance. I know what he can do and what he has done. I am ready to campaign day and night to make sure the Southeast gives him victory in 2027,” Kalu said.

Kalu’s remarks have stirred political debate across Nigeria, with observers noting that his statements highlight the complex dynamics of regional politics and alliances ahead of the 2027 race.

The senator also cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against returning to the presidential contest, citing constitutional provisions that bar any individual from holding the office for more than eight years.

According to Kalu, Jonathan should embrace his role as an elder statesman and continue contributing to national stability from outside active politics. “President Jonathan has done his part and served the nation. The law does not permit him to contest again, and it’s best he remains a respected statesman,” Kalu added.

Kalu’s open endorsement of Tinubu reinforces his position as one of the President’s strongest allies in the Southeast and signals renewed efforts to improve APC’s standing in the region. His statement also underlines the strategic push by Tinubu’s supporters to reshape political narratives before 2027.

Political analysts say Kalu’s confidence reflects a mix of loyalty, calculation, and belief that Tinubu’s government can deliver tangible results before the next election. His remarks also reignite discussions about zoning, party structures, and the growing competition among political heavyweights for influence ahead of 2027.
