The House of Representatives has taken the first step toward establishing a new federal university aimed at promoting Nigerian languages with the passage of a bill for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others, passed its first reading on Thursday, setting the stage for the creation of an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Nigerian languages and culture.

The proposed university, according to the bill, would offer academic and professional programs that lead to diplomas, first degrees, and higher degrees in Nigerian languages and cultures. The institution would focus on developing adaptive and productive skills in the field of language learning, contributing to national development by producing professionals capable of communicating effectively in Nigerian languages.

A key feature of the university’s mission is to encourage the advancement of learning while providing equal opportunities for higher education to all, regardless of race, creed, gender, or political affiliation. The institution would also act as a catalyst for research and innovation, particularly in areas relating to the effective and sustainable utilization of Nigeria's human and natural resources.

Section 14 of the bill outlines that the President of Nigeria, who will serve as the "Visitor" to the university, must conduct or order a visitation to the institution at least once every five years. The President also has the authority to remove council members, except for the pro-chancellor and the vice-chancellor, if recommended by the university’s governing council.

The bill is expected to be scheduled for a second reading in the coming weeks, after which a public hearing will be held to gather input from various stakeholders.

This new university would not only preserve the richness of Nigerian languages but also contribute to the cultural and intellectual development of the nation by equipping students with skills essential for national growth.
