First Bank Building Partially Collapses in Umuahia, Triggers Panic in Commercial District

A section of the First Bank building along Bank Road, Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, collapsed on Saturday afternoon, causing panic among residents and traders in the busy commercial area.

Eyewitnesses said the collapse happened suddenly during off-working hours, sending shockwaves through the area that hosts several banks, offices, and shops. Many passersby and nearby traders were seen running for safety as debris fell from the affected structure.

Emergency responders and security operatives quickly arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and begin rescue and safety assessments. The extent of the damage and any possible casualties are still unclear as of the time of filing this report.

According to reports, parts of the building’s upper structure gave way, leaving adjoining structures at risk. Shop owners and bank customers have been advised to stay away from the vicinity until structural engineers complete an integrity check.

The Abia State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigerian Police Force are currently on-site to manage traffic, prevent looting, and ensure safety in the area.

Authorities are expected to release an official statement once a full assessment is completed. Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information about the incident.

The collapse has reignited discussions about building safety standards, structural maintenance, and regulatory enforcement in Umuahia’s commercial zones.
