Abia Leads Again as Governor Otti Set to Launch Green Shuttle Electric Vehicle Transport Service
Abia State Governor Alex Otti is set to launch the Abia Green Shuttle Service, Nigeria’s first fully electric public transport system, featuring 100 electric buses, solar-powered charging stations, and modern bus terminals in Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia.

Abia State is once again taking the lead in innovation and development, as Governor Alex Otti’s administration prepares to launch the Abia Green Shuttle Service, a fully Electric Vehicle (EV) public transport system designed to redefine mobility, cut carbon emissions, and promote sustainable development across the state.
The groundbreaking initiative, which is the first of its kind by any state government in Nigeria, will position Abia as a pioneer in clean and sustainable transportation. The project is part of Governor Otti’s broader vision for a modern, eco-friendly, and globally compliant transport infrastructure.
According to government sources, the Abia Green Shuttle Service will deploy 100 electric buses across the state’s three major cities — Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia. The project includes the construction of modern terminals and solar-powered charging stations to support the operations of the electric buses.
The first batch of 20 electric buses, along with 10 fully equipped charging infrastructures, is expected to be operational before the end of the year. Each charging station will include accessibility solutions for persons with disabilities. The second batch, consisting of another 20 buses and an additional 10 charging stations, will arrive by early next year.
In Aba and Umuahia, the state is already completing modern bus stops designed to provide comfort, efficiency, and safety for commuters. Routes are being mapped out to ensure smooth and reliable services.
Beyond providing eco-friendly transportation, the Abia Green Shuttle project is structured to reduce dependence on fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel, while also cutting reliance on grid electricity. The system will be powered largely by solar energy and battery storage technologies, ensuring continuous operation and cost efficiency.
The initiative will not only enhance urban mobility but also improve road safety, reduce traffic accidents through designated bus stops, and create significant employment opportunities in the transport, maintenance, and energy sectors.
Governor Otti’s administration views the project as a critical step toward climate responsibility, economic growth, and improved quality of life for Abia residents. The electric shuttle system underscores his administration’s drive to adopt modern solutions to long-standing infrastructure challenges.
The Abia Green Shuttle Service represents a future-driven commitment to sustainable governance and aligns with global climate goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.
As construction of terminals and charging hubs nears completion, Abia State is set to make history as the first subnational government in Nigeria to deploy a full-scale EV transport network.
