Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu Condemns Beheading of Couple in Abia State

Bende: The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has expressed deep outrage and sorrow over the brutal killing of a couple, Jacob Udo and Comfort Udo, in Bende Local Government Area, Abia State. Describing the crime as "horrific and senseless," Kalu joined other leaders in condemning the gruesome act, which has sent shockwaves through the community.

Jacob Udo and his wife, Comfort, were residents of Isiala Autonomous Community in Bende but originally hailed from Itumbuzor, also in Bende LGA. The couple was reportedly beheaded and their bodies dismembered by yet-to-be-identified attackers on Tuesday night.

In a statement issued by Livinus Nwabughiogu, the Deputy Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Kalu denounced the heinous crime, stating that such violence is not only unacceptable but also a violation of the fundamental human right to life. He emphasized that no grievance or cause could ever justify such barbarity.

“The brutal killing of this couple is a shocking act of violence that contradicts the basic principles of humanity,” Kalu remarked. “This senseless act violates the most basic right – the right to life. My thoughts are with the victims' families during this painful time.”

Kalu, who represents the Bende Federal Constituency, also urged the Abia State government and law enforcement agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice. He emphasized that a thorough investigation is essential to ensure accountability and prevent future violence.

In addition to calling for justice, Kalu appealed to the community to remain calm and avoid any form of retaliation. He reassured his constituents that the authorities were working to apprehend the perpetrators and warned against actions that could escalate tensions.

“I call for calm and restraint among the communities. Reprisal attacks will only fuel more violence. Rest assured, the authorities will do everything necessary to find those responsible and ensure they face the full weight of the law,” Kalu said.

The tragic killing of the Udos has left the Bende community in grief and fear, while local leaders have rallied to support the victims’ families. Kalu’s strong condemnation of the attack reflects the growing concern over violent crime in the area and the demand for justice to be served swiftly.
