We won’t participate in Abia LG election – APC

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that it will not be participating in the upcoming local government election scheduled for November 2, 2024. The party cited a lack of official communication from the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) as the reason for its decision.

This declaration was made during a joint meeting held by the state executives and local government chairmen of the party in Umuahia. The APC expressed frustration over what it described as ABSIEC’s failure to properly notify them of the election details through official channels.

Engr. Sterling Uruakpa, the State Assistant Secretary and acting Publicity Secretary of the APC, emphasized that the party will not rely on unverified information from social media concerning the election. He criticized ABSIEC for its failure to follow formal procedures, calling for more transparency and effective communication.

“The All Progressives Congress is the ruling political party in Nigeria and the biggest party in Africa. We will not tolerate any form of contempt or disrespect from ABSIEC,” Uruakpa stated.

He further urged ABSIEC to ensure that all political parties are included in the electoral process by providing a level playing field, which is crucial for fostering trust in the commission and the election process.

APC leaders in Abia stressed that ABSIEC must ensure due process is followed and that future elections are conducted with full transparency. The party demanded that ABSIEC adopt proper communication methods to reach all political stakeholders, guaranteeing fairness in the electoral landscape.

The upcoming local government election is seen as an important moment for the political landscape of Abia State, and APC’s boycott may have significant implications. However, it remains unclear if ABSIEC will respond to APC’s demands or issue further clarification ahead of the November polls.
