My Total Monthly Earning As Senator Is N14m – Orji Uzor Kalu

Abia North Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has disclosed his monthly earnings of N14 million during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. This revelation comes in the context of ongoing discussions about the perceived affluence of Nigerian lawmakers compared to the struggles faced by the general populace.

Senator Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, asserted that his N14 million salary encompasses all expenses, including staff salaries and overhead costs. He argued that this amount is insufficient to cover essential costs, such as fuel for travel to his constituency and the maintenance of his constituency office.

Addressing common perceptions about lawmakers’ benefits, Kalu refuted claims that they are provided with official vehicles for personal use. He clarified that only committees within the National Assembly receive vehicles, emphasizing, “no lawmaker is given any vehicle.”

Kalu also commented on Nigeria's economic challenges, noting that the effects of COVID-19 continue to impact economies worldwide. He pointed out that the differences in recovery among countries stem from long-term economic planning and resilience.

Regarding President Bola Tinubu's awareness of the hardships faced by Nigerians, Kalu expressed confidence in the president's understanding of the economic landscape, stating, “The president knows that Nigerians are suffering and hungry.” He highlighted that Tinubu often drives around Abuja at night to observe the situation firsthand.

As the conversation around the role and remuneration of lawmakers continues, Kalu’s statements may provoke further debate on the economic realities in Nigeria and the accountability of public officials.
