ASUBEB Sets Up Committee to Review Posting of 5,300 Newly Recruited Teachers in Abia

The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has inaugurated a special committee to review the deployment of the 5,300 teachers recently recruited by the state government. The move is designed to address concerns, especially among the majority of successful applicants—80 percent of whom are married women—about being posted to locations far from their families.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia on Wednesday, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Lydia Onuoha, said the review was necessary to ensure a humane, efficient, and practical posting process. According to her, the newly recruited teachers are expected to assume duty on September 1, 2025.

“We have a large percentage of applicants that are married women, which is 80 percent. This makes it difficult to post this group of persons away from their families,” Onuoha explained.

She emphasized that the committee would work in close consultation with various stakeholders, including education managers and community leaders, to ensure that the deployment process is fair and does not disrupt family life or personal stability. She also urged both the newly recruited and existing teachers to remain calm and cooperative while the board finalizes deployment logistics.

To improve communication, ASUBEB has activated a helpline for affected teachers to raise complaints or make inquiries about their postings. Additionally, Dr. Onuoha revealed that Governor Alex Otti has approved special provisions for teachers posted to hard-to-reach areas, including possible incentives and support.

In a major security boost for public schools, the ASUBEB Chair also announced that the Governor had approved the recruitment of security personnel for schools across the state. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with local government Mayors to ensure schools are safer and more secure for both students and teachers.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Uzoamaka Amah-Mba, who chaired the original posting committee, stated that the team worked diligently to ensure transparency throughout the process. She affirmed that no applicant was extorted, addressing rumors of bribery and favoritism that have surfaced in some quarters.

The review of the teacher postings comes at a crucial time, as the Otti-led administration intensifies reforms in the education sector to improve access, quality, and equity across Abia’s school system.
