Senator Uche Chukwumerije, born on January 11, 1939, in Ogoja, Cross River State, Nigeria, was a distinguished political figure, journalist, and fervent nationalist. He passed away on April 19, 2015, at the age of 75, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. His death occurred in Abuja, where he was surrounded by his family.
Chukwumerije's early life was rooted in Isuochi, present-day Abia State. He pursued his education at Methodist Central School, Nkwoagu, and Our Lady's High School, Onitsha, before obtaining a degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1961.
His professional career commenced in journalism, where he held positions such as Head of the Features Desk at the Daily Times and worked at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. His expertise in media and communication led to his appointment as the Minister of Information and Culture under General Ibrahim Babangida's military regime and later under the Interim National Government of Ernest Shonekan. In these roles, he was instrumental in articulating and disseminating government policies.
In 2003, Chukwumerije transitioned into legislative politics, representing Abia North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. Known for his steadfast principles, he opposed the controversial Third Term Agenda, which led to his departure from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Progressive Peoples Alliance in 2006. Demonstrating political resilience, he was re-elected to the Senate in 2007 and again in 2011 on the PDP platform. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, he was a vocal advocate for educational reforms and policies aimed at national development.
Beyond his political endeavors, Chukwumerije was a dedicated family man. His son, Chika Chukwumerije, is an accomplished athlete who secured a bronze medal in Taekwondo at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Another son, Dikeogu Egwuatu Chukwumerije, has made significant contributions to Nigeria's literary scene as a writer and performance poet.
