Abia State Set to Host First-Ever Tertiary Institution Games to Boost Youth and Sports Development
Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has approved the first-ever Tertiary Institution Games (ASTIG 2025), set for October 28–31 in Umuahia, to promote sports, youth development, and unity across tertiary institutions in Abia.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has approved the hosting of the state’s first-ever Tertiary Institution Games, aimed at strengthening youth engagement, promoting sports development, and fostering unity across higher institutions in the state.
The event, initiated through the Ministry of Tertiary Education, will feature participation from both private and public tertiary institutions across Abia. It is scheduled to hold from October 28 to 31, 2025, at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
According to the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme-Uche, the Abia State Tertiary Institution Games (ASTIG) will serve as a platform to develop teamwork, discipline, communication, and social skills among students, while also helping to identify new sports talents.
Addressing members of the Central Organising Committee (COC) during their inaugural meeting at the Ministry’s boardroom in Umuahia, the Committee Chairman and Special Adviser to the Governor on Tertiary Education, Dr Emeka Enyiazu, expressed appreciation to Governor Otti for his consistent investment in youth and educational advancement.
Dr Enyiazu noted that the Committee was carefully selected to ensure a successful and well-coordinated event. He added that the Governor’s approval for the Games reflects his administration’s resolve to nurture young talents and promote excellence through sports.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Barr Chinyere Okeziem-Nwoko, urged committee members to exhibit professionalism and dedication in carrying out their duties, emphasizing that the Commissioner has set a high benchmark for success.
Also speaking, the Abia State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, praised the Governor and the Commissioner for their vision. He said the Games will play a crucial role in developing sports at the tertiary level and in discovering potential senior athletes who can represent the state in national and international competitions.
The Abia State Tertiary Institution Games (ASTIG) mark a major milestone in the Otti administration’s agenda to promote education, sports, and youth empowerment across the state.
