Labour Party NEC Probes Governor Alex Otti Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities, Rules Out 2027 Merger Talks

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has launched an investigation into alleged anti-party activities of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and other unnamed party members. The development was made public on Friday during a press briefing following the party’s NEC meeting held in Abuja.
In an official statement, the NEC revealed that it had reviewed the conduct of certain members deemed to have acted contrary to the party’s interests. It specifically cited Governor Otti, stating, “NEC reviewed the anti-party activities of Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor,” prompting the formation of a disciplinary committee to handle the matter.
The committee, which is chaired by Ayo Olorunfemi, has been mandated to submit its report within two weeks. The party did not disclose the specific allegations against Otti, but the move signals rising tensions within the Labour Party amid internal leadership consolidation.
Meanwhile, the NEC expressed satisfaction with the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the leadership of Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman. The court’s decision, NEC said, has put to rest the lingering legal battle over the party’s national leadership, thus enabling the LP to focus on internal cohesion and strategic planning ahead of future elections.
A major highlight of the NEC meeting was the party’s firm rejection of any coalition or merger talks ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the resolution, the Labour Party will not cede its leadership or enter any alliance that compromises its autonomy.
“NEC agreed that the Labour Party will not be part of any coalition or merger ahead of 2027. We are not surrendering our leadership under any guise,” the statement emphasized, reinforcing Abure’s continued grip on the party’s direction.
The declaration comes amid speculation that opposition parties may explore alliances to unseat the ruling party in 2027. However, the LP insists it is charting an independent course under its current leadership.
Governor Alex Otti, who won the Abia governorship seat on the LP platform in 2023, has often been viewed as a leading figure in the party’s progressive bloc. The investigation into his actions could trigger political ripples, especially in Abia State, where he enjoys widespread grassroots support.
Political analysts say the Labour Party’s strong stance signals an intent to consolidate its structure and avoid internal sabotage that could undermine its chances in upcoming elections.
