Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Detained for Allegedly Assaulting Bolt Driver in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained lawmaker Alex Mascot Ikwechegh following allegations of assault against a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, during a delivery incident in Abuja. The police confirmed that Ikwechegh is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station.
The altercation reportedly began when Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh. A dispute over the delivery method escalated, leading to claims of physical assault by the driver. According to Abuwatseya, he was slapped during the confrontation.
FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh indicated that the situation intensified when Ikwechegh allegedly dismissed the authority of law enforcement by challenging officers, saying, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.” This response has raised concerns regarding the lawmaker's respect for police authority.
In light of the incident, Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has mandated a comprehensive investigation to ensure transparency and accountability. “The Command is committed to an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Appropriate legal action will be taken following the investigation,” the statement read.
This incident has sparked discussions about the treatment of service workers and the responsibilities of public officials in Nigeria. The outcome of the investigation will be closely monitored by both the public and law enforcement agencies.
