You won’t be annexed into another state – Abia Government assures Azumuni community
Dept Gov. of Abia State, H. E Engr Ikechukwu Emetu

In a recent meeting in Umuahia, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu addressed concerns from residents of Azumini in Ukwa East Local Government Area regarding a road construction project initiated by the Akwa Ibom State government. Emetu emphasized the importance of cooperation from the community to ensure the timely progress of the project.

Despite previous discussions with Azumini delegates, Emetu noted that fears about potential annexation by Akwa Ibom persisted among residents, hindering construction efforts. He reassured the community that the Abia State government had engaged in comprehensive discussions with their Akwa Ibom counterparts, clarifying that there were no intentions to annex any part of Abia State. “It is the boundary council that has the duty to annex an area,” he stated, addressing the community's apprehensions.

Emetu also highlighted that there was an existing agreement for the Akwa Ibom government to compensate individuals whose lands or crops might be affected by the road project. This assurance aimed to alleviate fears and foster a spirit of collaboration.

Fidelis Nnah, representing the Azumuni people, expressed gratitude for the Deputy Governor's explanations but reiterated the community's desire for a formal written agreement between the two states. This documentation would serve to prevent any potential boundary disputes in the future.

The Deputy Governor's call for unity underscores the importance of infrastructure development in enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth in the region. As the road project continues, stakeholders from both states are encouraged to work together to ensure its success.
