The people of Ohanku Ndoki in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State are raising a passionate cry for help over the worsening condition of public schools in their community. They are appealing to Governor Alex Otti to intervene and restore dignity to education in the area.
Photos emerging from Okotoko Primary School, Ikwuorie Community Primary School, and Ikwuorie Comprehensive Secondary School paint a disturbing picture of extreme neglect. In these schools, pupils are seen sitting on bare floors inside roofless, broken classrooms. There are no desks, no windows, no doors, and in some cases, not even blackboards. Despite these appalling conditions, dedicated teachers continue to show up, teaching children under trees or in crumbling structures.
The situation came to official attention following a directive from the Chairman of Ukwa East LGA, Hon. Chibunna Akara, who tasked local leaders to assess the true state of education in their wards. Responding swiftly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Chinonyerem Ekeke, the Ikwuorie Ward Councillor, submitted visual evidence to the appropriate authorities, calling for urgent renovation and government attention.
Community members say the current state of these schools is unacceptable and reflects years of abandonment. According to them, it is not just about broken buildings — it is about broken futures.
“This is not just neglect; it’s a violation of our children’s right to a safe and decent education,” one community elder told People of Abia. “We are begging Governor Otti to come to our aid. These children deserve better.”
The call for action is growing louder as images circulate across social media, drawing public sympathy and outrage. Parents and education advocates insist that the situation must be treated as a priority if Abia State is serious about its long-term development and equity in education access.
