NUC Approves Reintroduction of Five Key Management Science Courses at MOUAU

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved the re-establishment of five key management science courses at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU). This decision marks a major academic milestone for the university, as it restores programs that were previously delisted.

The newly reapproved courses include:

BSc. Accounting

BSc. Marketing

BSc. Banking and Finance

BSc. Business Administration

BSc. Economics

These programs have been granted full accreditation and will officially commence in the 2024/2025 academic session at the university's main campus.

In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, and signed by the Acting Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, the NUC confirmed the approval after a comprehensive verification exercise. This assessment was conducted to ensure that MOUAU possesses the necessary academic and infrastructural resources to run the programs effectively.

The reintroduction of these courses follows the Federal Government's 2016 directive, which led to their removal from specialized universities like MOUAU. The government had mandated universities to focus on their core academic disciplines, resulting in the discontinuation of management science programs at agricultural institutions.

However, MOUAU persistently lobbied for their reinstatement, arguing that management science courses are crucial for equipping agricultural stakeholders with essential business, financial, and administrative skills.

The successful reinstatement of these programs has been largely credited to the visionary leadership of Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe. The Vice-Chancellor has been relentlessly advocating for the transformation of MOUAU into an entrepreneurial agricultural university, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of modern agricultural education.

Prof. Iwe's strategic initiatives and commitment to academic excellence played a key role in securing NUC's endorsement, ensuring that MOUAU remains a competitive institution offering diverse academic programs.

With the return of these five programs, MOUAU is now positioned to:

Expand academic opportunities for students seeking careers in business, finance, and economics.

Enhance research and training at the intersection of agriculture and management sciences.

Boost national development by producing graduates equipped with financial literacy, entrepreneurial skills, and business management expertise.

The approval is also expected to increase student enrollment, attract more funding opportunities, and strengthen MOUAU's reputation as a leading institution for agricultural and business education.

The re-establishment of BSc. Accounting, BSc. Marketing, BSc. Banking and Finance, BSc. Business Administration, and BSc. Economics at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) represents a significant achievement for the institution. It reflects NUC's commitment to academic flexibility and recognizes the growing demand for integrated education that bridges agriculture and management sciences.

With this approval, MOUAU is set to provide a dynamic learning environment, equipping students with the skills needed to drive economic growth and innovation in Nigeria.
