Abia Records Lowest INEC Online Voter Registration in Nigeria
INEC data shows Abia State ranks lowest in Nigeria’s ongoing online PVC pre-registration with just 6,038 entries. Analysts call for greater awareness and youth participation ahead of 2027 elections.
In the latest data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abia State ranks lowest among all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in the ongoing online pre-registration for Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
According to INEC figures, only 6,038 Abians have pre-registered online out of 7,415,760 Nigerians who completed the process within just two months of the exercise.
In comparison, Borno State leads with 783,546 registrations, followed by Osun (632,751) and Lagos (590,341). Other southeastern states also recorded relatively low numbers — with Enugu (19,966), Ebonyi (12,489), and Imo (70,069) all appearing in the bottom ten.
The low turnout in Abia has sparked conversations about civic participation, political engagement, and voter education across the state. Analysts say the figures raise serious questions about awareness and accessibility among potential voters, particularly young people and first-time registrants.
“Abia is one of the most politically conscious states in the Southeast, yet these numbers suggest a worrying disconnect,” a political observer told People of Abia. “If this trend continues, it could affect representation and voter influence in the next general election.”
Civic groups are urging residents to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise and ensure their participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC has also reminded citizens that registration is both online and in-person at local government offices and designated centres.
With Abia at the bottom of the national chart, many see this as a wake-up call for communities, youth organisations, and faith groups to mobilize citizens toward active political involvement.
