Nnamdi Kanu Issues Letter of Authority to Hon. Obi Aguocha to Negotiate with FG for His Release

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has formally authorized Hon. Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, to engage the Federal Government on his behalf in pursuit of a political resolution to his continued detention.

The official authorization, contained in a Letter of Authority dated July 11, 2024, was issued by Kanu through his lead counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor of Aloy Ejimakor Legal Services (Obidimkpa Chambers).

According to the letter, Kanu instructed Ejimakor to empower Hon. Aguocha to interface directly with relevant federal authorities, including top government officials and institutions, to initiate dialogue aimed at securing his release. The authorization grants Aguocha full discretion to negotiate and make decisions that best serve Kanu’s interests, provided he maintains close collaboration with the legal team.

“The lawmaker is authorized to explore all lawful and political options available to achieve a peaceful resolution, including steps that may lead to my release from detention and the discontinuance of ongoing prosecution,” the letter reportedly stated.

This development comes amid growing calls for a political solution to Kanu’s case, which has persisted since his re-arrest in 2021 and subsequent detention by the Department of State Services (DSS)

Hon. Obi Aguocha, a first-term lawmaker in the House of Representatives, has consistently advocated for dialogue and reconciliation as the most viable path toward restoring peace in the South East. He has also called for adherence to the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights.

Reacting to the authorization, political observers say Kanu’s decision signals a new strategic approach aimed at opening direct communication lines between his camp and the Federal Government. Many believe it could mark the beginning of a genuine reconciliation process if handled with transparency and political will.

Aguocha’s new role places him at the center of one of Nigeria’s most sensitive political and legal issues, with expectations now high for constructive engagement that could ease long-standing tensions in the South East.

The move aligns with recent appeals from prominent leaders, including religious and traditional authorities, urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to consider a non-judicial resolution to the IPOB leader’s case in the interest of national unity and peace.
