NMA Completes Court-Ordered Medical Examination on Nnamdi Kanu, Submits Report to Attorney General

The Nigerian Medical Association has completed the medical examination on Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, as directed by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Secretary-General of the NMA, Dr. Ben Egbo, confirmed the development on Sunday in an interview with The PUNCH.

The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, had on September 26 ordered the NMA to set up a panel of medical experts within eight days to evaluate Kanu’s health condition. The order followed Kanu’s application seeking to be transferred from the custody of the Department of State Services to the National Hospital due to what he described as deteriorating health.

Justice Omotosho directed that the committee should also assess the capacity of the DSS hospital to provide adequate medical care for the detained IPOB leader. The ruling granted the NMA committee the liberty to use any hospital in the country during its investigation.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Egbo disclosed that the association complied fully with the court’s directive.

“The court gave an order that we should do it within eight days, and immediately the Department of State Services wrote to us, we summoned a committee of seven doctors with one coordinator, making it eight in total,” Egbo said.

He explained that the doctors were drawn from all seven geopolitical zones of Nigeria and represented various medical specialties, including Ophthalmology, Neurology, Urology, and Gastroenterology.

“They went there, examined him, and the committee wrote their report to us, and it was sent to the Attorney General of the Federation,” he added.

Dr. Egbo emphasized that further inquiries regarding the report should be directed to the Ministry of Justice.

“We have submitted the report to the Attorney General’s office as instructed. Anyone seeking details should contact the Ministry of Justice,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Kanu’s legal team has petitioned the World Medical Association over alleged health complications and inadequate medical care in DSS custody.

The next steps regarding the court’s consideration of the medical report are expected to determine whether Kanu will be transferred to the National Hospital for further treatment.
