Governor Otti Flags Off Reconstruction of Key Roads in Umuahia, Announces Urban Mass Transit Initiative

In a major infrastructural push, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially flagged off the reconstruction of Orpet - Umuafai - Lodu - Ahiaeke Road (4.32 km) and Ahiaeke - Okwuta - Bende Road (3.79 km) in Umuahia North LGA, totaling 8.11 km.

Speaking at the event held at Ahiaeke, Governor Otti emphasized that the projects are expected to be completed within nine months and will significantly improve the daily lives of commuters, farmers, students, traders, and property owners.

Governor Otti highlighted the socio-economic impact of the roads, stating that the completion of the projects would alleviate transportation difficulties, stimulate local businesses, and increase land value.

"These roads, when completed, will ease the movement of thousands of people, enhance economic activities, and improve access to businesses along these corridors,"Otti said.

He further noted that the roads would create employment opportunities and promote sectors such as agriculture, real estate, hospitality, financial services, and ICT.

"We are not just building roads; we are expanding the Umuahia ecosystem, creating job opportunities, and boosting the economic strength of fixed-income earners and entrepreneurs" the Governor stated.

Governor Otti also announced the upcoming Urban Mass Transit Initiative, set to launch in the next few months.

"This initiative will revolutionize transportation in major cities like Umuahia and Aba, reducing transport costs for commuters and improving passenger safety at all times," he explained.

Modern bus terminals and shelters currently under construction.

Well-maintained road networks to support intra- and inter-city transit.

Streamlined transportation services to enhance urban mobility.

According to Governor Otti, his administration is focused on setting new governance standards that prioritize long-term infrastructure development.

During the event, Hon. Obi Aguocha, the representative for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, praised Governor Otti for his grassroots-oriented projects. He emphasized that the newly reconstructed roads would ease the transportation of farm produce, help reduce food prices, and boost land value.

Hon. Aguocha also appealed to the Governor to rehabilitate Ofeke Road, which has been neglected by past administrations. In response, Governor Otti directed the Commissioner for Works to inspect the road and report back for further consideration.

Other political leaders present, including Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Nmeregini (Deputy Speaker, Abia House of Assembly) and Hon. Ugochukwu Collins Iheonunekwu (Member representing Isialangwa North State Constituency), lauded the Governor for prioritizing road infrastructure development.

The Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, acknowledged the poor state of the roads and the economic hardship it caused road users, stating that the reconstruction marks the beginning of a new era for residents and businesses in the area.

Various stakeholders and business owners welcomed the project, describing it as long overdue.

Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi (Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre Umuahia) expressed gratitude, noting that poor roads had previously affected emergency medical services.

Chief John Onyeiro (President General, Ndume Otuka Federated) praised the government for prioritizing infrastructure.

Local artisans, Mr. Raphael Ihefo and Mr. Nnamdi Okwuazu, stated that the project would improve goods transportation and increase business activities.

The event was attended by top government officials and stakeholders, reaffirming the Otti administration's commitment to infrastructural renewal and economic development.
