Abia State Government to Provide Hearing Aids for 1,000 People, Launch Health Insurance Scheme in Partnership with Obasanjo Foundation
The Abia State government has announced plans to provide hearing aids to 1,000 individuals with hearing impairments as part of a broader effort to enhance healthcare access in the state.
This initiative is in collaboration with the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation and will be executed under the Sound Intervention Hearing Mission 2025 program. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists on the resolutions of this week's State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Otti will jointly unveil the Sound Intervention Hearing Mission 2025 alongside the state's formal health insurance scheme on April 2, 2025, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
Prince Okey Kanu further disclosed that the health insurance scheme is designed to improve access to quality healthcare for vulnerable groups in the state. He described the initiative as a significant step in Governor Otti's vision for inclusive governance and proactive healthcare management.
"The insurance scheme would mark a new era of proactive healthcare management in Abia, demonstrating the state government's commitment to ensuring that every resident has access to quality medical services,"Kanu stated.
In addition to the healthcare initiatives, the Commissioner also revealed that Obasanjo will inaugurate a 45-kilometer reconstructed section of the Umuahia-Isuikwuato-Abiriba-Ohafia road, which was rehabilitated by the state government.
This road project is part of Governor Otti's administration's broader infrastructure agenda aimed at improving connectivity, trade, and overall economic growth in Abia State.
With these initiatives, the Abia State government aims to enhance the standard of living, promote healthcare accessibility, and strengthen the state’s infrastructure for sustainable development.
