Governor Otti Bans Fireworks for the Christmas Season, Orders Strict Enforcement.

The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has announced a total ban on the use of fireworks, including knockouts, bangers, and other explosive materials, during the Christmas and New Year festivities. This decision, aimed at ensuring the safety and security of lives and property, was revealed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.

The ban, which covers all urban and rural areas of the state, is part of the government’s proactive measures to prevent criminals from exploiting the festive atmosphere to cause panic or commit unlawful acts. Governor Otti has instructed security agencies, including the Police, to strictly enforce the directive and apprehend violators.

Prince Okey Kanu, speaking on behalf of the state government, explained the rationale behind the decision. He highlighted that the use of fireworks poses significant safety risks and can serve as a cover for criminal activities during the festive season.

“The Abia State Government wishes to inform the general public that the use of fireworks, including knockouts, bangers, and other related explosive materials, is hereby banned during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. This measure has been taken to ensure the safety and security of lives and property within the state during the yuletide season."

He further emphasized that the directive is designed to maintain peace and order while safeguarding communities from unnecessary risks.

The government has tasked Mayors across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), along with Traditional Rulers and Town Unions, to ensure the directive is strictly implemented in their respective communities. The enforcement effort will be carried out in collaboration with security agencies to guarantee compliance.

“The state government, by this announcement, is asking the Mayors in all the 17 local government areas, Traditional Rulers, and Town Unions to ensure that this directive is carried out to the letter in their domains in concert with the Security Agencies."

The government warned that anyone found contravening the ban would face severe penalties under the law. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to take immediate action against violators to deter others and ensure the safety of residents.

The statement concluded with an appeal to residents and citizens of Abia State to support the initiative by celebrating the festive season responsibly and peacefully. The government reiterated its commitment to creating a secure environment for all.

“Abians and residents are therefore enjoined to cooperate with the state government and Security Agencies to celebrate this festive season in safety, peace, and harmony."
