FCCPC Shuts Down Fake Consumer Protection NGO in Aba, Arrests Operator

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), in a joint operation with law enforcement, has shut down an illegal organization impersonating a consumer protection agency in Aba, Abia State. The raid was conducted at No. 214 Aba-Owerri Road, targeting a group known as the Community Crime Prevention Initiative of Nigeria (CCPIN).

According to a statement by the FCCPC, the enforcement action was triggered by credible intelligence that CCPIN was falsely claiming affiliation with the Commission. The organization was misleading the public by presenting itself as an “Authorised Consumer Protection NGO” of the FCCPC.

The fraudulent group had reportedly issued public notices, alleging it was conducting joint surveillance operations with FCCPC and actively soliciting consumer complaints through unauthorized phone numbers.

During the operation, Amb. Dr. Onwuka Okorie, the operator of the premises, was arrested and is currently in police custody at the World Bank Police Station, Abayi-Aba, pending further investigation and prosecution. The FCCPC recovered multiple exhibits from the premises, including fake enforcement documents, materials bearing the Commission’s logo, and other misleading items intended to deceive the public.

The FCCPC has strongly disassociated itself from CCPIN, stressing that it does not authorize, partner with, or delegate enforcement powers to any NGO, private entity, or individual without formal legal documentation.

In its statement, the Commission emphasized its commitment to transparency, market integrity, and genuine consumer protection. It urged the public to ignore any announcements, sealing notices, or consumer campaigns issued by CCPIN or its agents.

The FCCPC also encouraged consumers to verify any suspicious communication through its official hotlines: 08056002020 and 08056003030.
