Abia State Ministry of Environment Declares “Operation Clean All Gutters and Drains” for March 2025 Sanitation Exercise

The Abia State Ministry of Environment has issued a public directive urging all residents, businesses, and community leaders to actively participate in the state-wide sanitation exercise tagged “Operation Clean All Gutters and Drains.†This initiative aims to tackle environmental hazards caused by blocked drainage systems, which contribute to flooding and health risks.
The sanitation exercise is scheduled to take place in two phases:
Friday, March 28, 2025 (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM): All markets, motor parks, and business premises are required to embark on a collective cleaning exercise. Tippers will be provided to evacuate waste materials to ensure proper disposal.
Saturday, March 29, 2025 (7:00 AM - 10:00 AM): All residents across Abia State are expected to clean the drains and surrounding environment.
The Ministry of Environment emphasizes that a clean environment is essential for public health and safety. Blocked gutters and drains have been linked to increased flooding and disease outbreaks. This sanitation exercise is a proactive measure to mitigate these risks and promote a cleaner, healthier Abia.
Environmental officers will be deployed across various locations to monitor compliance. Defaulters who fail to participate in the exercise will face appropriate sanctions.
The Ministry calls on Mayors, traditional rulers, landlords, market leaders, motor park operators, business owners, community leaders, churches, and the general public to take this directive seriously. By working together, residents can ensure a cleaner and safer environment for all.
This initiative underscores the commitment of the Abia State Government to environmental sustainability. Residents are encouraged to take responsibility for their surroundings and make sanitation a continuous practice beyond the scheduled exercise.
