Abia State Government to sanction Schools for Early Resumption
The Information Commissioner also condemned the recent vandalism of public property

The Abia State Government has issued a warning to school proprietors who resumed academic activities before the approved date of September 23rd for the 2024/2025 academic session. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a recent briefing following a State Executive Council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu expressed concern that some schools ignored the government's directive, emphasizing that such actions contradict the regulatory measures being established by the current administration in the education sector. He announced that the Ministry of Education would investigate the matter to identify schools that violated the resumption date.
"Some schools resumed yesterday against the directive issued by the Ministry of Education," Kanu stated. "As the government reforms the education sector, it is essential to establish a robust regulatory environment."
He warned that principals who fail to adhere to the directive could face sanctions.
In addition, Kanu discussed the Committee on the Recovery of School Lands, revealing that not only private individuals but also religious organizations, communities, and market associations have illegally occupied public lands. The committee is committed to reclaiming these encumbered parcels.
The Information Commissioner also condemned the recent vandalism of public property, specifically mentioning the arrest of a company responsible for damaging manholes along the Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard. He urged communities, traditional rulers, and youths to take responsibility for safeguarding government properties in their areas.
