Abia State First Lady Advocates for Laws to Protect Elderly Citizens, Announces Free Healthcare Services

Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the wife of the Governor of Abia State, has reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the elderly by advocating for the domestication of laws that protect senior citizens. Speaking at an event organized by the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection to mark the International Day for Older Persons in Umuahia, the state capital, Mrs. Otti emphasized the need to prioritize the well-being of the elderly in both state and national programs.

During her address, Mrs. Otti pledged that the Abia State Government would ensure that elderly citizens receive their fair share of resources. She highlighted the introduction of free healthcare services for indigent seniors, allowing them to enjoy their later years in good health as a gesture of appreciation for their lifelong contributions to society.

Commitment to Elderly Welfare and Pension Payments

Mrs. Otti announced that the state government has ensured the prompt payment of pensions, providing financial security to the elderly population. "We have ensured the prompt payment of pensions to our elderly citizens, providing them with financial security and peace of mind," she stated. She further expressed pride in the government’s commitment to relieving seniors of financial worries, allowing them to live in comfort and security.

In addition to financial support, Mrs. Otti introduced the *Basic Health Care Provision Fund*, a free medical scheme that grants indigent seniors access to quality healthcare services. "This is our way of showing gratitude for their lifelong contributions to our society and ensuring they can enjoy their later years in good health," she added.

Expansion of Support Systems for the Elderly

Mrs. Otti also highlighted ongoing plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection to expand programs aimed at reaching the most vulnerable elderly individuals. She noted that her office would use its humanitarian platform to create more initiatives focused on enhancing the well-being of elderly citizens. In her speech, she encouraged well-meaning members of society to extend support to the elderly, emphasizing that the government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility.

Commissioner and Keynote Speaker Echo Support for the Elderly

The Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, applauded the state government’s efforts, particularly the commitment to timely pension payments and other supportive measures for seniors. She noted that the International Day of Older Persons, which Abia State proudly observes, serves to raise awareness about the unique needs and challenges faced by the elderly. "We have a responsibility to advocate for their rights and benefits," Mrs. Felix emphasized.

Meanwhile, the keynote speaker at the event, Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor, highlighted the importance of self-care among the elderly while also underscoring the need for community support. He advised older persons to prioritize regular exercise, a healthy diet, and routine medical check-ups. Okoroafor celebrated the process of aging, emphasizing that while elderly individuals can take steps to care for themselves, they still need the support and care of their families and society.

International Day of Older Persons: A Global Call to Action

The International Day of Older Persons, observed annually on October 1, serves as a global event promoting awareness of the challenges faced by older people and the opportunities that aging presents. This year’s theme, *“Celebrating the Value of Older Persons, and the Integral Role they Play, Recognizing the Places and the People that Removed the Barriers,”* underscores the need to appreciate and support the elderly, while recognizing those who work to eliminate barriers to their well-being.

The event in Umuahia not only reinforced the importance of protecting and providing for the elderly but also called on the community, families, and stakeholders to continue advocating for the rights and needs of older persons. The Abia State government’s efforts, led by Mrs. Priscilla Otti, serve as a model for how other states can prioritize the well-being of their elderly populations.
