Abia Government Partners With German Embassy To Safeguard Welfare Of Abians In Diaspora

The Abia State Government has announced its readiness to partner with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to protect the welfare of Abians living in Germany and strengthen collaboration on diaspora-related issues.

The Executive Secretary and CEO of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, Rev. Annie Onu, disclosed this during a familiarization visit to the German Embassy in Abuja. She explained that the visit forms part of ongoing engagements with foreign missions to project the image of a “New Abia” under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership.

According to Rev. Onu, the initiative is designed to ensure that Abians living abroad remain law-abiding, receive proper guidance and representation, and continue to make positive contributions both to Nigeria and their host countries.

“The primary purpose of this visit is to explore areas of collaboration with you. We have a large number of Abians in Germany and in the event of any challenges they may face, you can reach my office directly. This will help us ensure they comply with German policies and receive the necessary support,” she said.

She added that Governor Otti is committed to good governance and the welfare of Abians worldwide. “The Governor is determined to ensure that sons and daughters of Abia are well cared for wherever they live. He also encourages them to contribute meaningfully to their host countries, while maintaining their commitment to Nigeria.”
Rev. Onu revealed that the Commission has begun creating a comprehensive database of Abians in the diaspora to strengthen connections and engagement with citizens abroad. She also assured that the Commission would provide proper guidance to prospective travelers to avoid fraudulent practices and documentation challenges.

She encouraged Abians seeking visas to contact the Commission for support in verifying documents and confirming genuine contacts abroad. According to her, this step will prevent citizens from becoming stranded or falling victim to fraud.

In his response, the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Johannes Lehne, welcomed the delegation and expressed the Embassy’s readiness to collaborate with the Abia State Government, particularly in tackling fraudulent visa practices.

He revealed that the Embassy occasionally receives falsified requests from individuals claiming to represent ministries and agencies in Nigeria. He stressed that the Abia Diaspora Commission could play a key role in verifying genuine requests from the State.

“We believe there are individuals within government circles who exploit the system for personal gain. This is where your support would be invaluable. Any assistance you provide in this regard would be greatly appreciated,” Lehne said.

He further advised visa applicants to begin their applications at least ten days in advance to reduce the risk of rejection.

With this partnership, Abia State seeks to not only protect its citizens abroad but also build trust and stronger ties with foreign missions, ensuring that Abians in Germany are better represented and supported.
