20 Years After, Governor Otti Pays Tribute to Late Pro-Democracy Activist Chima Ubani

Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has paid glowing tribute to the late pro-democracy crusader, Comrade Chima Ubani, describing him as a rare gem, a hero, and a courageous defender of justice whose death still leaves a painful vacuum two decades later.

In his 20th remembrance message, Governor Otti reflected on the life and sacrifice of the Abia-born activist who died in 2005 in a motor accident along Potiskum Road, Maiduguri, during a nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Ubani was at the forefront of the struggle for workers’ rights and good governance when the tragic crash occurred.

“Today reminds me of a disaster that devastated many of us,” Governor Otti said. “Knowing Chima meant loving him sincerely. We were bonded as student leaders, and I later discovered our fathers were not just clergymen in the same church, but close friends. Chima yielded himself to the nation, serving humanity with courage, candour, and compassion. He sacrificed his comfort and freedom for the people.”

The Governor noted that Ubani’s life embodied altruism, tenacity, and selflessness, virtues that defined him as a true comrade. He lamented that Ubani had not been accorded his rightful place in Nigeria’s history despite the lasting impact of his activism.

Governor Otti assured that his administration would immortalize Ubani, stressing that his legacies must not be forgotten. “It would be a betrayal of Chima’s spirit if those noble virtues he upheld and the struggles we embarked on collectively are abandoned midway,” he added.

While recalling the sorrow Ubani’s passing brought upon his family, friends, and the entire nation, the Governor expressed confidence that his soul rests peacefully in God’s bosom. He joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating Ubani as a martyr of the masses, praying for the continued repose of his soul.

The 20th anniversary of Chima Ubani’s death serves as a reminder of his sacrifice for democracy, justice, and the Nigerian people, values which Governor Otti emphasized must continue to guide leaders and citizens alike.
