We can Declare your seat Vacant - Hon. Obi Aguocha Rebukes Deputy Speaker Over Comments on Abia State's Political Future

In a sharp response to recent comments made by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ben Kalu, the Honourable Member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has issued a statement condemning Kalu’s remarks regarding the political future of Abia State.

The controversy erupted following the circulation of a video in which Hon. Ben Kalu declared that Abia State would become an All Progressives Congress (APC) state in 2027, a statement that has sparked widespread reactions. Kalu, representing the Bende Federal Constituency, made the bold claim, asserting his loyalty to the APC and his commitment to delivering Abia State to the ruling party.

Hon. Aguocha expressed shock at the remarks, questioning the Deputy Speaker's discretion and the appropriateness of his comments. Aguocha described the statements as “condescending, denigrating, and disrespectful,” particularly towards the current Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the Labour Party, which currently holds power in the state.

In the video, Hon. Kalu also referenced his position as the sixth in the order of leadership hierarchy within the Federal Government, a claim that Hon. Aguocha criticized as an example of "brazen and rabid indiscretion." Aguocha urged Kalu to focus on his legislative duties and to use his position to promote inclusiveness and reduce marginalization in the Southeast, rather than engaging in what he termed "reckless" political commentary.

Aguocha further pointed out that the Labour Party, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, won a landslide victory in Abia State during the last election, securing over 65% of the votes while the APC garnered less than 4%. He emphasized that the people of Abia State are satisfied with Otti’s leadership and will continue to support him beyond 2027.

The statement concluded with a reminder to Hon. Kalu that Abia State’s political landscape has significantly changed, and any attempt to shift the state’s allegiance to the APC will require more than "mere grandstanding."
