Abia community discovers 30 bodies of suspected ritual killing victims in Imo River

The traditional ruler of Oriendu Autonomous Community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, His Royal Highness Eze Philip Ajomiwe, has expressed deep concern following the discovery of more than 30 unidentified bodies in the Imo River over the past year. In a recent press briefing at his palace, Eze Ajomiwe disclosed that the victims, predominantly young women, were often found unclothed, with missing body parts, or enclosed in bags.

Eze Ajomiwe suspects that these heinous acts are perpetrated by ritualists from neighboring Imo State, who allegedly dispose of the bodies in the river under the cover of darkness, instilling fear within the community. Despite multiple reports to security agencies, no arrests have been made to date. The community vigilante group, lacking adequate resources, finds itself ill-equipped to confront the well-armed perpetrators.

The monarch has formally reported the alarming situation to security authorities, including a recent appeal to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly on February 7. He emphasized the urgency of government intervention to empower local security outfits with the necessary logistics and support to effectively combat these atrocities.

Eze Ajomiwe also acknowledged the government recent increase in monthly stipends for traditional rulers but noted that the amount remains insufficient to address pressing security challenges. He called for additional support, highlighting that traditional leaders lack security votes akin to those allocated to governors, which are essential for equipping community vigilante groups to maintain peace and security.

In response to these revelations, the Abia State Police Command has stated its intention to investigate the matter further. Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chilaka, indicated plans to consult with the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area to verify the reports and determine whether formal complaints have been lodged.

The community continues to grapple with fear and uncertainty as these gruesome discoveries persist, underscoring the critical need for prompt and decisive action from both state authorities and security agencies to safeguard the lives and well-being of residents.
