Security Operatives Nab Impostor Extorting Commercial Drivers at Ariaria International Market, Aba

In a firm show of commitment to curbing extortion and illegal activities, security operatives at the Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State, have apprehended a suspected impostor extorting commercial drivers under the guise of collecting levies.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Kelechi Amadi, was arrested on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Park One, a section of the market known for its heavy traffic of Keke (tricycle) operators, motorcycle riders, and commercial bus drivers. He was caught during a routine patrol coordinated by the Office of the Chief Security Officer (CSO), headed by Hon. Frank Moses, under the leadership of the Market Chairman, Deacon Michael Ogbonnaya Aniorji.

According to security sources, Mr. Amadi, who hails from Eche in Rivers State but resides at Ohanku Road by Ngwa Road, had been illegally imposing a “gate pass” levy on transporters within the market. He falsely claimed to be authorized to collect these fees, misleading drivers into believing it was an official market requirement.

Upon his arrest, the suspect allegedly confessed to operating under the instruction of one Mr. Aja, whom he identified as a supposed revenue collector within the market vicinity. Mr. Amadi admitted that he had been engaged in this illegal act for an extended period and had been consistently remitting proceeds to his alleged sponsor.

The market’s security unit, backed by the strong directive of the Chairman and CSO, has taken a zero-tolerance stance against such illegal activities that disrupt market order and exploit hardworking citizens.

“We are sending a clear message that Ariaria is not a haven for extortionists or impostors. The safety of our traders, transporters, and buyers is non-negotiable,” said Hon. Frank Moses.

Authorities have commenced an investigation to track down Mr. Aja and other potential collaborators involved in the extortion ring. The market’s leadership also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting only legitimate revenue practices while improving the security architecture within one of West Africa’s largest and busiest commercial centers.

The arrest has been met with commendation from commercial drivers and market stakeholders, many of whom expressed relief over the crackdown on unauthorized levies and the protection of their economic interests.

This development underscores the current administration’s effort to sanitize revenue collection, foster law and order, and create a conducive environment for commerce and transportation in the bustling Ariaria Market.
