National Leadership of NUP Meets Governor Otti, Tenders Apology Over State Chapter Missteps as Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Pensioners

In a landmark reconciliation effort, the National leadership of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, met with the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, to tender a formal apology on behalf of the Abia State chapter of the union and seek a renewed commitment to resolving the ongoing issues concerning pensions and gratuities.

The meeting, held at the Governor’s office in Umuahia, was led by the National President of NUP, Mazi Godwin Abumisi, who commended Governor Otti for his exceptional leadership and visible achievements across the state. He appealed directly to the Governor to forgive the previous actions of the Abia NUP leadership and revisit the agreement previously signed with the state government, which he described as “signed in ignorance.”

Governor Otti, while responding, reaffirmed his readiness to reengage with the pensioners and find lasting solutions to their grievances. He directed his Senior Special Assistant on Labour Matters, Comrade Godson Anucha, to lead a negotiation committee comprising the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Special Adviser on Media Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, and Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi.

“I don’t have the exact figures now because it keeps increasing. But I believe every problem can be solved when there is political will — and I assure you, from this table, the will exists,” Governor Otti said.

He also took time to set the record straight, noting that the current administration inherited substantial arrears — some dating as far back as 10 years. Upon taking office, Governor Otti said he invited the state NUP leadership for dialogue and secured ₦10 billion to settle pension debts. Those owed ₦1 million or less received 100% payments, while others with higher arrears received up to 60%.

However, Otti expressed disappointment at the way the state NUP leaders handled the process, accusing them of twisting facts and misrepresenting the administration’s efforts. He stressed that his administration is built on truth and integrity.

“It’s not about not making mistakes; it’s about being honest and correcting them. But you don’t lie. And what brought us here today is largely because of lies,” the Governor asserted.

National NUP President Abumisi acknowledged these efforts and responded with humility.

“We are not here to argue. Whatever they signed, they did so in error. I plead with you to tear that document. Your Excellency, you are paying salaries, gratuities, and pensions. That is why I say it without fear — you are a star performer,” he said.

The high-level meeting was attended by top government officials and marked a critical turning point in the state’s effort to restore transparency and trust in its relationship with pensioners.
