Mrs Otti Celebrates Abia Elders, Advocates Dignity and Protection for Senior Citizens

The Banquet Hall of Government House Umuahia was aglow with compassion, reflection, and commitment as the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, led the charge in celebrating and advocating for the protection of elderly citizens during the 2025 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The event, themed “Addressing Abuse of Older Adults in Abia State Through Data and Action,” was hosted by the Office of the Wife of the Governor in partnership with the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection. It served as a powerful reminder of society’s collective responsibility to uphold the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of senior citizens.

In her stirring address, Mrs. Otti passionately called on families, government institutions, community leaders, and the general public to unite in ending elder abuse in all its forms—physical, emotional, financial, and psychological.

“Our elders loved us unconditionally, raised us with wisdom, and shared their visions with us. We owe them not only our gratitude but a strong system of care and protection,” she stated.

She noted that elders are the backbone of every society—having raised generations, built communities, and preserved core cultural values. Mrs. Otti lamented that despite their contributions, many elderly people face various forms of abuse and neglect in silence.

Commending Governor Alex Otti for prioritizing the welfare of senior citizens, she highlighted the governor’s efforts, especially in the prompt payment of pensions and improved access to healthcare services for older adults. She further applauded the state’s legislative strides, including the Abia State Senior Citizens Law 2025 and the Elderly Persons Welfare Law—two landmark bills that institutionalize care and protection for the elderly in Abia State.

She encouraged older citizens to make use of government-provided healthcare facilities by undergoing regular medical checkups and screenings, underscoring the administration’s commitment to accessible healthcare for all.

Delivering a goodwill message, Mrs. Blessing Felix, Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, praised Mrs. Otti’s unwavering dedication to championing elder rights and pledged continued support and collaboration in eradicating abuse and neglect of senior citizens.

Also speaking, Mazi Nwaka Otti, Chairman of the National Senior Citizens Centre in Abia State, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Otti for signing the Senior Citizens Welfare Bill into law and making elderly care a policy priority.

Giving the vote of thanks, Mrs. Magdalene Ugoanusi, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Traditional Rulers and Chieftaincy Affairs, extended appreciation to the Otti-led administration for recognizing and institutionalizing elderly welfare and prayed for the success of the government’s social policies.

The event was not just ceremonial—it also featured free medical checkups for elderly attendees and the distribution of care packages to enhance their well-being. In attendance were the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Adaeze Emetu, top government officials, traditional rulers, and representatives from various communities across Abia State.

As the curtains fell on this year’s observance, the message remained clear: Elder abuse is a violation of human dignity, and everyone has a role to play in ensuring that our elders live in peace, health, and honor.
