Governor Alex Otti Reaffirms Loyalty to Labour Party Amid Speculation of Defection

In a firm response to recent speculations about his political future, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has reiterated his allegiance to the Labour Party (LP), addressing rumors surrounding his potential defection to other political groups. Speaking during his monthly media chat in Umuahia this November, Governor Otti reassured the public of his commitment to the LP, clarifying that any decision to change parties would be publicly communicated in due course.

The Governor's remarks come in the wake of the recently concluded local government elections in the state, which saw the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) win 15 of the 17 local government areas, while the Young Peoples Party (YPP) secured victories in two. The results led to widespread conjecture that Governor Otti, who had previously authorized his supporters to align with any party of their choice, might be preparing to join the ZLP. However, Otti took the opportunity to quell such rumors and reinforce his position within the LP.

“I remain in Labour Party,” Otti stated, addressing the concerns. “If there is ever a need for me to leave, the public will be informed.” His words directly confronted the swirling speculation that had hinted at a potential switch to the ZLP, a party that made significant inroads in the recent elections.

Governor Otti further explained that the political landscape within the LP had created an environment where some of his supporters felt compelled to seek affiliation with other parties. However, he emphasized that these actions were not indicative of any shift in his own political stance. “Our people understand those who will represent their interests well,” Otti said, drawing on a local proverb to illustrate his point: “You know the child you would send out who won’t embarrass you, even if he’s hungry.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Otti reminded the public that his loyalty to his supporters had always been unwavering, regardless of party affiliation. “When I first contested under APGA, we achieved unprecedented victories, taking nearly half of the House of Assembly seats,” he recalled, highlighting his ability to unite people around a shared vision beyond party lines.

The Governor's directive for his supporters to explore other political affiliations was largely prompted by the internal strife within the LP, which had created dissatisfaction among some of his followers. However, he made it clear that his personal commitment to the LP remains unchanged. “I authorized my followers to join any political party that resonated with them,” he reaffirmed. “But I am firmly in the Labour Party.”

Governor Otti’s reassurances come at a crucial time for Abians, as they continue to look to their leaders for stability, direction, and progress. His firm stance on his political affiliation serves to quash any doubts regarding his loyalty to the Labour Party, signaling his commitment to both the people of Abia State and the ideals of the party.
