ABSG Holds Special Night of Tributes in Honour of Late Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Comrade Sunny Onwuma

The Abia State Government (ABSG), in a solemn and heartfelt ceremony, held a special Night of Tributes in honour of the late Comrade Sunny Okebugwu Nwanganga Onwuma, the former Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, who passed away recently at the age of 62.

The emotionally charged event took place at the JAAC Building Auditorium in Umuahia and was attended by top government functionaries, family members, friends, clergy, labour leaders, and sympathisers. It was an opportunity to reflect on the life, impact, and legacy of a man widely regarded as a voice of the voiceless and a dedicated servant of the people.

Delivering a moving tribute, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, described Comrade Onwuma as a dependable colleague whose approach to problem-solving was always positive and disarming. The Governor recounted his experiences working with the late commissioner and highlighted his role in managing delicate labour issues.

“It was a pleasure working with him,” Governor Otti said. “Every time there was tension, he had a unique way of diffusing it. He was not just a Commissioner — he was a bridge builder.”

Governor Otti urged everyone to reflect on the kind of legacy they would leave behind, noting: “What will people say about you when you are no more? That’s the question we all must ask ourselves.”

He assured the grieving family that the government will stand by them, pledging full support during this difficult time.

Speaking on behalf of the State Executive Council, Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu and Attorney General Barr. Ikechukwu Uwanna praised the late commissioner’s unwavering dedication to workers’ welfare and his impactful contributions at EXCO meetings. They described him as a knowledgeable and passionate leader whose legacy would endure.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Mrs. Clara Dim, described him as humane and humble, noting that his leadership style was rooted in empathy and integrity.

Comrade Ihechi Eneogwe, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Abia State, represented the Organised Labour and paid glowing tributes to the deceased. He recalled Onwuma’s tenure as State Chairman of TUC and how he championed workers’ rights with courage and vision.

“He was a true comrade, a distinguished labour leader, and a committed public servant who brought his wealth of experience to bear as Commissioner,” Comrade Eneogwe said.

In his sermon titled “Look and Live”, taken from John 3:14–15, Venerable Dr. Chukwuemeka Agbanyim of the Anglican Church encouraged attendees to look to Jesus for salvation, affirming that Comrade Onwuma lived a good Christian life and was resting in peace.

Personal tributes were also rendered by his wife, Mrs. Stella Ngozi Onwuma, and daughter, Miss Ezinne Onwuma, who described him as a loving father, mentor, a man of integrity, and a pillar of support to his family. They expressed deep sorrow at his passing but profound gratitude for the life he lived.

Friends and associates, including Mr. Innocent Nwogwugwu, Eze Justice Uwaga, and Sir Nathan Harbour, all spoke fondly of Onwuma’s jovial nature, sense of humour, and commitment to humanity.

Late Comrade Sunny Onwuma, a former TUC Chairman in Abia State, will be laid to rest on Thursday, May 15 at his hometown in Isiala-Ihie, Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of Abia State.

The night of tributes was graced by numerous dignitaries including Her Excellency, Mrs. Priscilla Chidimma Otti, the wife of the Governor, as well as elected and appointed government officials.

As the state mourns a dedicated public servant, the legacy of Comrade Sunny Onwuma will continue to resonate within Abia’s political, social, and labour circles for years to come.
