Abia State Set to Host Nigerian National Volleyball Federation Championship

Abia State is set to host the second phase of the Nigerian National Volleyball Federation Division One and Two Championship in Umuahia, the state's capital, as the sports sector continues to thrive under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, highlighted Governor Otti's commitment to making Abia State a leading destination for sports. "Abia will soon be the number one destination for sports tourism and the business of sports. We are working towards that goal," he said.
Ananaba noted that since the governor took office, numerous sports federations have chosen Abia for various events, underscoring the state’s increasing prominence in the Nigerian sports scene. "We are excited to welcome the whole nation for the Volleyball Championship Divisions One and Two," he added.
The commissioner also disclosed that Governor Otti had approved the renovation of the indoor sports hall of the stadium to meet international standards. With preparations in full swing, Ananaba expressed confidence in the state’s readiness to host the championship and said that Team Abia is geared up to deliver a commendable performance.
In addition, the state’s Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, revealed that the competition will span from October 10 to October 20, 2024, with athletes arriving from 19 states. George praised Governor Otti for transforming the state’s sports sector, which had faced challenges in the past. “Before now, things were topsy-turvy in the state sports council, but the coming of Governor Alex Otti has sincerely turned things around,” George said.
The Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Volleyball Association, Muhammed Muhammed, also commended the governor for his unwavering support of sports development in the state and Nigeria at large. He emphasized that not every state leader prioritizes sports, but Governor Otti has shown exceptional interest by sponsoring multiple competitions, including the South South-South East Volleyball Championship held two months ago.
As the championship kicks off, Abia State is set to reinforce its growing reputation as a sports hub in Nigeria, drawing attention from athletes and fans alike.
