Abia State No Longer Among Nigeria’s Worst 10 list for Road Infrastructure
Abia State has made notable progress in improving its road infrastructure, leading to its removal from the list of Nigeria's top ten states with the worst roads. This achievement is largely due to the concerted efforts of Governor Alex Otti's administration, which has prioritized extensive road rehabilitation and construction across the state.
Since assuming office, Governor Otti has initiated over 140 road projects, focusing on both urban centers like Umuahia and Aba, as well as rural communities. In Umuahia, key roads such as Aba Road, Otuka Road, and Ikot-Ekpene Road have undergone significant maintenance, enhancing connectivity within the capital. Similarly, in Aba, known as the state's commercial hub, roads like Jubilee Road, Queen’s Street, and Emelogu Street have been reconstructed, facilitating smoother transportation and boosting economic activities.
The administration's commitment extends beyond urban areas. The flag-off of the 19.1-kilometer Itungwa-Mgboko-Amaise-Amairi-Omoba-Abiaba-Nkwo-Elechi road under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) exemplifies efforts to connect rural communities, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity and market access.
Furthermore, the reconstruction and dualization of the 5.5-kilometer Owerrinta-Umuikaa Road aim to improve entry points into Abia, creating a more inviting experience for travelers from neighboring states. This project is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce the risk of road accidents along this corridor.
These infrastructural developments have not gone unnoticed by residents and businesses, who have experienced reduced travel times and enhanced access to markets. The improved road networks have also led to increased patronage for traders, as customers find it easier to access commercial areas.
While these achievements are commendable, residents are calling for sustained efforts to ensure continuous improvement in infrastructure across the state. The administration's ongoing projects and future plans indicate a commitment to building on this progress, aiming for a future where Abia's road infrastructure sets a benchmark for excellence in Nigeria.
