Abia State Govt Intensifies Road Infrastructure Development With 48 Direct Labour Projects Underway, Adds New Routes To Maintenance Plan

The Abia State Government, under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, has scaled up its road infrastructure development efforts, with 48 direct labour rehabilitation and maintenance projects currently underway across the state. This bold initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to improving road networks, enhancing economic activity, and increasing access to vital services throughout the state.
The update was disclosed by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia. The announcement came after the weekly State Executive Council (SEC) meeting presided over by the Governor.
According to Prince Kanu, two of the 48 projects have already reached completion, namely:
• The 1-kilometre Ahiama–Umueka–Oku–Olokoro Road in Umuahia South LGA
• The 11.4-kilometre Nkwegu–Afugiri–Umueyata Road in Umuahia North LGA
These completed roadworks are part of the Otti administration’s strategic efforts to rehabilitate and open up road access in all zones of the state, easing mobility for residents and traders alike.
In addition to the ongoing projects, three new roads have been included in the state’s direct labour maintenance program. These include:
• 400-metre Ozuama Spur through Kopas Lodge in Umuahia North LGA
• 3.3-kilometre Abiriba Roundabout to Uriakwa Junction Road in Aba
• 120-metre Senator Adolphus Nwagbara Road, off IBB–Ahiaeke Road in Umuahia
The use of direct labour, which involves engaging local engineers and manpower, has been highlighted as a cost-effective approach allowing for quick deployment, real-time supervision, and prompt delivery of projects.
The Commissioner emphasized that these road improvements are not just infrastructure upgrades but are directly tied to the economic revitalization of the state, improved intra- and inter-community linkages, and better access to social and commercial amenities.
“Governor Otti’s administration is not just fixing roads; it is laying the foundation for long-term prosperity and development by ensuring that every part of Abia is accessible, motorable, and connected,” Prince Kanu stated.
Residents are encouraged to cooperate with project handlers and remain patient as temporary inconveniences during construction will lead to more durable and accessible roads.
With this aggressive infrastructural push, the Abia State Government reaffirms its promise to deliver people-centered governance and measurable development across all 17 LGAs.
