Abia State Government Introduces New Church Signpost Tax, CAN calls for reversal

The Alex Otti-led administration in Abia State has sparked controversy with the introduction of a tax on church signposts, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from religious leaders across the state. The Abia State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed strong opposition, stating that Abia is the only state in Nigeria implementing such a tax.

In a letter addressed to Governor Otti, signed by CAN State Chairman Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma and Secretary Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the organization warned that the new policy could be perceived as "anti-church" by the Christian community. The leaders urged the governor to reconsider the tax to prevent further division between the church and the state.

“We passionately plead with your Excellency as a matter of urgency to carefully look into this matter and possibly rescind this policy to avoid compelling the Body of Christ in the State from seeing this regime as being anti-church,” the letter stated.

Additionally, CAN proposed a roundtable discussion with state Christian leaders to explore an amicable resolution to the issue, highlighting the need for dialogue in addressing the concerns of the church community.

As the situation unfolds, the reaction from both the government and the religious community will be closely watched, as many seek clarity on the implications of this new tax.
