Abia State Completes Procurement of Electric Buses for Mass Transit, Delivery Set for November 2025

The Abia State Government has finalized payment for the acquisition of brand-new electric buses as part of its ambitious Mass Transit Scheme, marking a major step toward modern, eco-friendly public transportation in the state.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a post-Executive Council briefing in Umuahia. The meeting, chaired by Governor Alex Otti, emphasized the administration’s firm commitment to sustainable urban mobility and climate-conscious infrastructure.

According to Prince Kanu, the electric buses are currently under fabrication in China and are expected to arrive in Abia by November 2025. Once delivered, they will form the core of the Abia Mass Transit Scheme, aimed at transforming how residents commute within the state.

“This is not just about buses—it’s about cleaner air, better traffic flow, and a more reliable transport system for our people,” Kanu said.

Strategic bus routes have already been mapped across key locations in the state, while final preparations are underway to ensure smooth deployment and operation of the fleet. The initiative, he noted, will reduce carbon emissions, enhance commuter safety, and boost economic productivity through improved mobility.

This move aligns with Governor Otti’s broader policy on green development, digital transformation, and people-centered governance. The introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) into the public transit system places Abia at the forefront of environmentally responsible innovation in Nigeria’s transport sector.

When fully operational, the Abia Mass Transit Scheme will:

  • Improve transport access in urban and semi-urban areas
  • Reduce pollution and fuel dependency
  • Create new jobs in fleet management and operations
  • Provide affordable and tech-driven commuting for all Abians

With the arrival of the electric buses scheduled for November 2025, Abia State is positioning itself as a national model for sustainable transportation reform.
