Abia Government Postpones Commissioning of Port Harcourt Road Project in Aba

The Abia State Government has announced the official postponement of the long-anticipated commissioning of the Port Harcourt Road project in Aba, citing scheduling conflicts with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s itinerary.
The announcement was made on Monday during a media briefing by the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who clarified growing speculations surrounding the delay.
“I’m sure some of you may have been hearing about it through the grapevine, so this is a formal announcement that the exercise has been put off,” Prince Kanu stated.
He revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was earlier expected to flag off the commissioning of the strategic road project, had to reschedule due to other national obligations. According to the Commissioner, the Presidency has now tentatively moved the visit to early June, when the project is expected to be formally commissioned.
“I recall that Mr. President, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, was to be on hand to flag off that project, but due to his schedule at this time, he elected to come to the state sometime in early June,” Kanu noted.
Though a new date was not officially provided, the state government assured the public that preparations remain in top gear, and the project will be ready for commissioning once the President’s visit is confirmed.
The Port Harcourt Road project is a major infrastructural milestone under the administration of Governor Alex Otti, and it is expected to significantly boost the economic landscape of Aba, a major commercial hub in the South East. The road had for decades been in a deplorable state, hampering trade and business activities.
Governor Otti’s administration has prioritized infrastructure renewal, and the Port Harcourt Road redevelopment is seen as a flagship achievement in his vision to transform Aba into a modern economic center.
The postponement, while disappointing to some residents and stakeholders, is understood to be a matter of protocol and scheduling logistics. The state government has urged the public to remain patient and optimistic, assuring that the project will be worth the wait.
