Abia Government Dispels Rumours Of July 6 Demolition At Ariaria Market

The Abia State Government has strongly refuted claims making the rounds on social media and local grapevines regarding an alleged planned demolition of Phase Two of the Ariaria International Market, scheduled for Saturday, July 6, 2025.
In an official statement released on Tuesday by the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, the government labelled the information as “completely untrue, misleading, and capable of inciting unnecessary tension among traders and stakeholders.”
The statement emphasized that no directive has been issued for the demolition of any part of Ariaria Market, especially the second phase, which is a hub for thousands of traders and small-scale business operators in the state.
“The public is advised to disregard the rumour in its entirety. Traders and business owners at Ariaria Market should continue their operations without fear or panic,” the Ministry noted.
The Ministry of Trade and Commerce also issued a stern warning to individuals and groups spreading the false narrative, stating that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
“We will not tolerate any form of false propaganda aimed at destabilizing the economic activities of the state or creating panic among our citizens,” the Commissioner stressed.
The government reiterated its commitment to supporting local businesses, fostering peaceful trade environments, and ensuring the welfare of market communities across the state.
Ariaria International Market, often referred to as the “Japan of Africa” due to its vibrant commercial activities and manufacturing hubs, is a crucial pillar of Abia’s economy. The state government’s reassurances are expected to calm fears and restore confidence among the business community in Aba.
This announcement comes as part of Governor Alex Otti’s broader effort to promote transparency, stability, and stakeholder engagement in matters affecting commerce and urban development across Abia State.
