Abia Government Declares War on Cybercrimes and Misinformation, Vows to Deal with Violators

The Abia State Government has taken a firm stance against cyber-related offenses, warning individuals and groups involved in misinformation, fake news, and cybercrimes that they will face legal consequences under the Cyber Security Act and Data Protection Act.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti, OFR.

Prince Kanu stated that the government would no longer tolerate the deliberate spread of false information, especially when disguised as political opposition or propaganda. He cautioned against reckless dissemination of unverified information, emphasizing its potential to incite public disorder and disrupt peace in the state.

This is to inform those who peddle falsehood in the name of opposition that time has come for them to desist from such unwholesome acts or be ready to face the full wrath of the law, Prince Kanu warned.

While reiterating that the Abia State Government remains committed to transparency and good governance, Kanu urged citizens to fact-check information before sharing it on social media or public platforms.

He noted that fake news has far-reaching consequences beyond politics, as it violates the rights of others, incites chaos, and can cause serious harm to society.

Such people need to be reminded of the Cyber Laws in our legal system. The Cyber Security Act and the Data Protection Act are all legally binding, and offenders will be held accountable,Kanu stated.

The Commissioner further stressed that the Otti-led administration is not against legitimate criticism or political discourse but will not condone the intentional spread of misleading narratives aimed at destabilizing the state.

With the enforcement of cyber security laws, the Abia State Government is putting potential violators on notice, making it clear that those caught engaging in cyber-related offenses, including false information, data breaches, and online fraud, will face prosecution.

Prince Kanu emphasized that the right to free speech comes with responsibility, and individuals must ensure that their actions do not breach the legal rights of others or threaten public peace.

While this Government has nothing to hide, we believe that the purveyors of falsehood are infringing on the rights of others,he noted.

In light of this strict policy on cyber-related offenses, the government is urging all residents to embrace ethical communication practices, verify news sources, and avoid spreading false narratives.

With this firm stance, Governor Alex Otti's administration is demonstrating its commitment to accountability, responsible governance, and fostering an informed society in Abia State.
